Approximately 4 acres of beautiful flower and food gardens in growing Zone 5 (Colder growing areas than Moscow or Lewiston). On our walking tours you’ll see a Eucalyptus tree that has survived the winter (and be taught the reason why), a fig tree that just loves the protection of our hoop house, our kiwi arbor, raised beds, the Batik Iris Patch (yes, we’re selling tubers this year), Paw Paw trees, two types of ginger, flowers galore, fruits you’ll not find in any local stores, zone 4 table grapes, our fruit orchard, Pixie’s Berry Patch, lots of arbors and vining plants. We have Indian Runner ducks, rare and endangered chickens (and our regular flock of older “girls” who live at Chicken Hill), our newest fancy chicken coop, butterfly gardens, a variety of composting and permaculture techniques, medicinal and culinary herbs and more. Continue reading →

The queens live 4-5 years but after 2-3 years they loose a bit of their vigor. You can tell when you need to replace the queen (order these from Tate’s and have her shipped overnight if you see any problems) because when you check the frames there are a bunch of drones in the frame in a little bunch. The drones are kind of freaky. They will all turn and look at you as a unit when you pick the frame up to check on it. Also, the queen will start laying eggs on the edge of the cone cell instead of the center of the cells. Continue reading →

We planted the apricots and plums in the chicken pen because we figured the chickens wouldn't eat the pits and the trees would be protected from the deer there. We were thinking that if we had planted any cherry or apple trees in that area the chickens would be eating the fruits eventually and may get poisoned with the cyanide in the pits and seeds of those particular trees. This way, as fruit falls to the ground that we can't harvest it will feed the chickens and cut down of that feed bill a bit. Continue reading →

GOD: Francis, you know all about gardens and nature. What in the world is going on down there? What happened to the dandelions, violets, thistle and stuff I started eons ago? I had a perfect, no-maintenance garden plan. Those plants grow in any type of soil, withstand drought and multiply with abandon. The nectar from the long lasting blossoms attracts butterflies, honey bees and flocks of songbirds. I expected to see a vast garden of colors by now. But all I see are these green rectangles. ST. FRANCIS: It's the tribes that settled there, Lord. The Suburbanites. They started calling your flowers "weeds" and went to great lengths to kill them and replace them with grass. Continue reading →

CSA growers grow everything in the garden catalog from A to Z in the way of veggies and some fruit, including heirloom tomatoes and herbs and some things you’ve probably never even tried before! Often the grower will include a recipe or two with each new addition in your basket (I think that’s a nice touch and we'll be putting lots of recipes up on our website.) Some of them even include farm-fresh eggs. We know neighbors who have fresh meat, chicken and even a turkey for Thanksgiving. Watch our Locavore section for other farmers in the area to augment your CSA or farm membership. Continue reading →
