Beekeeping Tips and Tricks
The queens live 4-5 years but after 2-3 years they loose a bit of their vigor. You can tell when you need to replace the queen (order these from Tate’s and have her shipped overnight if you see any problems) because when you check the frames there are a bunch of drones in the frame in a little bunch. The drones are kind of freaky. They will all turn and look at you as a unit when you pick the frame up to check on it. Also, the queen will start laying eggs on the edge of the cone cell instead of the center of the cells. Continue reading
Our Orchard
We planted the apricots and plums in the chicken pen because we figured the chickens wouldn’t eat the pits and the trees would be protected from the deer there. We were thinking that if we had planted any cherry or apple trees in that area the chickens would be eating the fruits eventually and may get poisoned with the cyanide in the pits and seeds of those particular trees. This way, as fruit falls to the ground that we can’t harvest it will feed the chickens and cut down of that feed bill a bit. Continue reading

What is a CSA vs. Farm Memberships? | farm membership
CSA growers grow everything in the garden catalog from A to Z in the way of veggies and some fruit, including heirloom tomatoes and herbs and some things you’ve probably never even tried before! Often the grower will include a recipe or two with each new addition in your basket (I think that’s a nice touch and we’ll be putting lots of recipes up on our website.) Some of them even include farm-fresh eggs. We know neighbors who have fresh meat, chicken and even a turkey for Thanksgiving.
